    Army Acronyms Demystified

    If you've ever talked to an enlisted member of the Army, you may have been confused by their letter-based conversations. In reality, it's just easier to use an acronym in most cases when explaining a situation, but for the civilian, it can be a frustrating process.



    Listed here are some of the most commonly used acronyms for your information. It my hope that by reading them, you?ll be better equipped to understand what your Army friends or relatives are talking about.




    ADSW- Active Duty for Special Work
    AFN- Armed Forces Network
    AGR- Active Guard Reserve
    AMMO- Ammunition
    ANG- Air National Guard
    APC- Armored Personnel Carrier
    APFT- Army Physical Fitness Test
    ARNG- Army National Guard
    AWOL- Absent Without Leave

    BAQ- Basic Allowance for Quarters
    BAS- Basic Allowance for Subsistence
    BCT- Basic Combat Training
    BDE- Brigade
